Kicking Dust
"If you are walking on a path and not kicking up dust, then you are not walking on a path."
Many of the communities threatened by wildfires in California are in horse country. Most are brought to shelters by their owners. When there isn't time for anything else, many turn their horses loose, to give them a chance to escape. Some are abandoned or lost in the midst of the chaos, hopefully later found. Heroes hitch up their trailers and head for the fire zone and often work day and night to help with the rescuing. During the Woolsey Fire, Zuma Beach became a temporary refuge for horses, llamas, and a pair of alpacas.
The sunlight illuminates a glorious cloud of dust kicked up by the herd at the wild horse sanctuary, Return to Freedom. There was no reason for the horses to run other than for the sheer joy, and knowing that we were watching, they didn't mind showing off.
